You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.\u00a0 I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you.\u00a0 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live.\u00a0 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.\u00a0 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.&#8221;\u00a0 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, &#8220;Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?&#8221;\u00a0 Jesus answered him, &#8220;Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.\u00a0 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me.\u00a0 I have said these things to you while I am still with you.\u00a0 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWithout the Holy Spirit,\u201d said Ignatius of Laodicea (Orthodox Metropolitan, at the third assembly of the World Council of Churches at Uppsala, in 1968) \u201cGod is distant, Christ is merely an historical figure, the Gospel is a dead letter, the Church is just an organisation, authority is domination, mission is propaganda, liturgy is only nostalgia, and the work of Christians is slave labour.\u00a0 But with the Holy Spirit, Christ is risen and present, the Gospel is a living force, the Church is a communion in the life of the Trinity, authority is a service that sets people free, mission is Pentecost, the liturgy is memory and anticipation, and the labour of Christians is divinised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church.\u00a0 The feast of Pentecost is an annual invitation to the Church to look into itself and discover its soul.\u00a0 It is tempted, like all of us, to keep looking the other way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In one sense it is more natural to forget about one\u2019s inner life and to get on with one\u2019s work.\u00a0 If you are always worrying about your heart or your liver, etc., you will not take risks or do a lot of work.\u00a0 A healthy person just goes to it.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church, and there is a sense in which that Spirit likes to work unseen, undeclared.\u00a0 \u201cIt is not those who say to me, \u2018Lord, Lord!\u2019 who will enter the kingdom of heaven\u201d (Matthew 7:21).\u00a0 Adapting Jesus&#8217; words we could say, It is not those who say \u2018Holy Spirit!\u2019 who will enter the kingdom of heaven.\u00a0 It is those who live by the Spirit.\u00a0 During the 2nd Vatican Council an Eastern bishop complained that there was little mention of the Holy Spirit in the documents.\u00a0 But something tells us that talking about the Spirit is not the same thing as living by the Spirit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, we do have to pay attention to that inner place, to see by what spirit we are being driven.\u00a0 If you never paid any attention to your health you would be asking for trouble.\u00a0 Today\u2019s feast is a reminder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But obviously there is much more to it than this.\u00a0 Traditional images of the Holy Spirit are: Fire, Wind, Water, Cloud, Dove\u2026. Why such strange images?\u00a0 All of them (except \u2018dove\u2019) have indeterminate boundaries or no boundaries at all.\u00a0 They are reminders that we should not dare to restrict the activity of the Spirit to a few things we can understand.\u00a0 <br \/> <em>O Dove, O Flame, O Water, Wind and Cloud\u2026!<\/em><br \/> <em>O love that lifts us wholly into God! <\/em><br \/> The Holy Spirit lives in us but is not confined in us.\u00a0 It is God; rather than being diminished in us, it \u201clifts us wholly into God,\u201d as the poet said.\u00a0 Any soul is for expansion, not constriction.\u00a0 Things that have no soul\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 sticks and stones\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 are restricted entirely to themselves; plants have a certain ability to reach beyond themselves, for food and for propagating their species; animals still more.\u00a0 But human beings are able to reach vastly beyond themselves and touch the depths of everything.\u00a0 This capacity is enlarged infinitely by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, so that we can touch even the depths of God. \u201cThe Spirit searches all things,\u201d St Paul wrote, \u201ceven the deep things of God. For who knows the thoughts of a person except the person\u2019s own inner spirit? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us\u201d (1 Cor 2:10).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a daring image the same poet, Jessica Powers, wrote that silence is a sort of decoy of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Just as hunters attract the flying birds out of the sky by placing a plastic or wooden model of them on the ground, we call down God&#8217;s Spirit by our silence.<br \/> <em>The decoy of silence,<\/em><br \/> <em>hope\u2019s unuttered sigh,<\/em><br \/> <em>that the Ultimate Silence<\/em><br \/> <em>drift down from the sky. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today\u2019s commentary is given by Fr Donagh O\u2019Shea OP <a href=\"http:\/\/goodnews.ie\/news.php?dt=2015-05-24\" target=\"_blank\">(http:\/\/goodnews.ie<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Jn 20:19-23 <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\"><em>&#8220;If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
