JOHN 14: 15–16, 23–26

Pentecost Sunday, Year C

TEXT

[15] “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. [16] And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor, to be with you for ever.

23 “If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you. 26 But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Commentary on Ascension of the Lord s12.05.2013

LUKE 24: 46–53

Ascension C

TEXT

Luke 24: 46–53

God’s promises fulfilled

46 Jesus said to the Eleven: “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,

Forgiveness of sins

47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.

The Holy Spirit

49 And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Ascension

50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven.

52 And they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.

Commentary on 6th Sunday of Easter 5.05.2013

JOHN 14: 23–29

Easter Sunday 6C

TEXT

Importance of Keeping God’s Word

23 Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

The Counsellor

25 “These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you. 26 But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

God’s Peace is Coming

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.

Departure to the Father

Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place, you may believe”.

Commentary on 5th Sunday of Easter 28.04.2013

JOHN 13: 01, 31–35

Easter — Sunday 5C

A.        TEXT

Introduction

1    Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

God Glorified in Son of man

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified; 32 if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.

Jesus is departing

33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’

The new Commandment

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Commentary on 4th Sunday of Easter 21.04.2013

JOHN 10: 27–30

Fourth Sunday of Easter, Year C

A.        TEXT

27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; 28 and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.

29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

B.        EXPLANATION

Introduction

This Gospel passage forms part of a section where the Jews are in their fifth dispute with Jesus. “The Jews gathered round him and said to him, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ [Messiah], tell us plainly’” (Jn. 10: 24). Their purpose in challenging him in this manner is to hear him say something which will lead to his arrest. He does not fall into their trap. He tells them that they do not believe because they are not his sheep. Today’s Gospel passage continues from this point.

Jesus Reveals himself

1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tibe’ri–as; and he revealed himself in this way.

Apostles go Fishing

2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathan’a–el of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zeb’edee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing.

Jesus’ Fishing Instructions

4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish.

“It is the Lord”

7 That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

Meal with Jesus

9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty–three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
