Parish notices Sunday of Ascension (B), 20.05.2012

MESSAGE OF THANKS FROM ARCHBISHOP MARTIN

The Bishops of Ireland are deeply grateful for the donations given to the four National Collections which have been taken up since 2009 for the 50 th International Eucharistic Congress.

Your support means that Ireland is able to extend a warm welcome to visitors to Dublin from Ireland as well as from all over the world for this very important event in the life of the Catholic Church in Ireland, which will take place from 10 th to 17 June.

There are so many initiatives underway in parishes and communities throughout the Archdiocese of Dublin in preparation for this significant occasion, which has as its theme, The Eucharist - Communion with Christ and with one another . I wish to express my appreciation for these initiatives.

The Congress can be for the Church in Ireland a moment of renewal and I would ask you all to keep the event in your prayers.

If you would like to offer further financial support to the Congress, please give your donation to your local priest. Your generosity is deeply appreciated and it is the intention to publish the full financial details of the Congress in due course.

Diarmuid Martin

Archbishop of Dublin

9          Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples

12        After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. 13 And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

Jesus Appears to the Eleven

14        Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen.

Commentary on 6th Sunday of Easter (B) 13th May 2012

Act 10: 25–26, 34–45, 44, 48; Psalm 97; I John 4: 7–10; John 15: 9–17

A         TEXT

John 15:9–17

Abide in My Love

9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

Goal: Joy

11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

Jesus is model of Loving

12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Friends not Servants

14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

Chosen by Jesus

16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

17 This I command you, to love one another.

Commentary on 5th Sunday of Easter (B) 6th May 2012

Act 9: 26–31; Psalm 21; I John 3: 18–24; John 15: 1–8

A         TEXT

John 15:1–8

“I am the vine”

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you.

“Abide in me”

4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

Results of abiding in Jesus

5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Results of not abiding in Jesus

6 If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned.

Fruits of abiding in Jesus

7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.
